DECT Digital Technology

DECT is short for Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication. It is a digital wireless technology which originated in Europe, but which is now being increasingly adopted worldwide, for cordless telephones. DECT is a technology that makes it possible to talk wirelessly via an ordinary telephone connection at a range of up to 300 metres.

Perhaps the biggest advances in sound quality, range and security have been in the realm of the new digital cordless phones. Digital provides noise-free and error-free transmission for the clearest cordless sound. It also provides call security by guarding your conversations from being monitored by another cordless phone
user or even a radio scanner. When cordless phones first hit the market they used analogue technology - reception wasn't perfect, call security was questionable and range was limited. These phones worked over the same bandwidth as many other radio devices. This is why calls placed on these phones often suffered from poor reception and interference.

Sound Quality

All cordless phones use FM frequencies, but there is a difference in sound quality between models. Analogue cordless telephones such as those available from BT have the fewest channels. The number of channels that a cordless telephone has can greatly influence sound quality because appliances and other electronic devices can produce radio interference. Digital cordless phones have as many as 120 channels. If there is interference on one channel the phone will switch channel automatically.

Range

Most digital cordless handsets can be carried anywhere around the house or garden. The maximum rated distance is 300m (just under 1000 feet). Various environmental factors can reduce the effective range of your cordless phone. Electrical appliances produce radio interference that can reduce the range of the phone. If you are trying to use your phone outside of your home, variations in terrain can also affect the signal from your handset to your receiver. Aluminum siding and wire mesh in walls and floors can also reduce, or block, the range.

Security

DECT telephones use data encryption for high security against eavesdropping. Digital transmission turns the analog sound transmission into a digital signal. When the transmission gets to the base, it is turned back into an analog signal. If anyone listens in on the signal, they hear what sounds like a fax machine.

What about safety?

Questions over the safety of mobile phones have inevitably led to questions over the safety of digital cordless phones. Like mobile phones, cordless phones use radio signals to communicate with their base station. With cordless phones however, the base station, normally the handset cradle, is usually only metres away. The signals sent by cordless phones are therefore much weaker than those sent by mobile phones. The power radiated by cordless phones is estimated to be only 8% of that from mobile phones. Therefore, it follows that if there is any risk to health from cordless phones, it will be substantially less than that from mobile phones.

Cordless Telephones

Great sound, good range and secure calling

You want a cordless telephone that sounds clear, works anywhere in the house and doesn't let anyone else listen to your calls. These qualities are determined by the phone's format (digital or analog) and frequency.

Phone formats

Analog: Mostly available from BT these days. While they are a less expensive option, analog phones can have additional noise on the line, and your conversation can be picked up by radios and other devices pretty easily.

Digital: Just as a CD offers better sound than a cassette, a digital phone offers better sound than an analog phone. You'll enjoy clearer reception and enhanced security, as the digital format makes it much more difficult for anyone to listen in on your conversation.

Features to look for

From basic phones to complete systems with all the lights, whistles and bells, cordless phones have the features you need to make the most of your talk time.

Expandability: Want to keep a phone in the garage? Instead of the disruptive task of running wires, consider an expandable phone system. With a base unit and one phone jack you can add a series of extra handsets that just need to be connected to a regular electrical outlet to work.

Answering system: A digital answering system records messages on a chip inside the phone, which means you can jump from one message to the next without rewinding or fast forwarding. Plus, some phones offer remote message retrieval, which allows you to play back messages using either the touchpad on your handset or a remote phone.

Caller ID: Caller ID displays the number, and depending on the phone you are using, the name of the person calling on an LCD screen located either on the handset or base of the phone. Some caller ID systems let you see who's calling even if you're on the other line (call-waiting caller ID) or "speak" the name of the caller out loud (talking caller ID).

Speakerphone: If you've got a speakerphone in the handset, you can set it down wherever you happen to be and continue to have a conversation. Base speakerphones can serve the same function, but they're even better when paired with a base keypad. If your handset has gone AWOL or is charging, you can still make and receive calls.

Selectable ring tones: It's fun to set the ringer to a sound you like. Some phones come with several built-in options, and others have polyphonic capability. This means that you can select ring tones that sound like proper music.
